Abbigayle Dipietro died in hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana, US, after suffering a seizure and falling into a coma.
The aspiring veterinarian was taken to the emergency room with an earache, but doctors were not initially concerned.
But when she began vomiting and having a seizure, medics began checking for meningitis and flu.
During the tests Abbigayle fell into a coma and she died on Tuesday February 5.
The little girl’s mum, Tasha Dipietro-Anderson told WNDU she had been struck with bacterial meningitis.

Paying tribute on Facebook, Mrs Dipietro-Anderson said: “She loved her family and animals. She was the sweetest little girl.
“She wanted to be a veterinarian. She was so alive and colorful and unique. She was the purest soul I have ever met.”

Elkhart County health bosses have warned parents a sore throat or earache could be an early symptom of meningitis.
But they have told the public Abbigayle’s illness was not a danger to other students.
